Nils Thorsen at CCA

I went to the CCA 2006 graduation exhibition last week, and saw some really amazing work, including David Maisel, who I remembered seeing on boingboing a few months ago. The picture below is from the work of Nils Thorsen. In addition to signs, there is video footage of the sign installers in action.
It's free, and open to the public daily from 10am - 7pm

Designer's Statement
My work examines what happens when one or more of the elements that give a sign authority are altered. My goal is to make the viewer of a sign question how they know a sign to be authentic and or trustworthy, who was involved in the creation and installation of the sign, and ponder how the stylization and the physical qualities of the materials give it authority.

Nerd Salon Braille Puzzle

MIT Super Nerds Liana Lareau and Colin Bulthaup, decoded the braille sign I made for Nerd Salon's monthly puzzle contest/geek gathering at 111 Mina on Tuesday night. Unfortunately I couldn't make it I had and important band practice, but I heard that the attendees were pretty impressed to learn about complexity of braille. Also in attendance were Phil Torrone and a flock of cock-fighting Roombas.

G.R.L. Goes West...

I had the pleasure of meeting some of the masterminds behind Graffiti Research Labs a few weeks ago at the Makers Faire. I also caught one of them photographing a Goatse Sticker.

Here's a video of GRL claiming their SoCal turf.

Instructables round-up 2

Here is the next batch of signage related instructables.
The picture above is the end result of a "how-to" on reusing
old unwanted metal signs. I like the image of the new
sign, but I'm not sure what it means. I guessing it reads
"no whipping in the store please", and it's for hardware
stores, and places that sell rope, tubing, chains, cable etc.

scrolling marquee
toilet sign with LEDs
Jacobs Ladder
hot wire foam cutter
